Sup up your trip with 3 words: An amazing country

Japan is a country that effortlessly blends the ancient with the modern, and my recent 12-night cruise around this fascinating nation was nothing short of spectacular. Travelling with Celebrity Cruises, I embarked on a journey that took me through bustling cities, serene temples, and breathtaking natural landscapes. Here’s a detailed account of my unforgettable experience.

Arrival in Tokyo

My adventure began with a flight to Tokyo via Singapore Airlines. Upon arrival, I stayed overnight in a centrally located hotel in the Ginza area. The hotel was immaculate, offering a full range of toiletries and even providing pyjamas for the stay. Tokyo itself was a marvel—busy yet incredibly organised and clean. The trains ran like clockwork, and the staff were always helpful. The pride the Japanese people take in their country was evident everywhere.

Setting Sail with Celebrity Cruises

The next day, I boarded the Celebrity cruise ship for a 12-night journey around Japan. Celebrity Cruises exceeded my expectations with their excellent and varied food options and top-notch entertainment. The ship visited seven ports of call, with a few relaxing sea days in between.

Ports of Call

  1. Shimizu: Our first stop was Shimizu, where we were fortunate to see Mount Fuji in all its glory, free from its usual cloud cover. The sight was truly awe-inspiring.
  2. Kobe: We had an overnight stay in Kobe, which allowed us to take the famous bullet train to Kyoto. The journey was a highlight, offering a glimpse into Japan’s advanced rail technology.
  3. Kochi: Kochi was a charming port with its own unique attractions, including beautiful temples and local markets.
  4. Hiroshima: Visiting the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima was a deeply emotional experience. The park serves as a poignant reminder of the lives lost during the atomic bombing on 6th August 1945. The survivor accounts and memorials were heart-wrenching yet important to witness.
  5. Busan, South Korea: Our itinerary included a stop in Busan, South Korea, adding an international flavour to our journey. The city was vibrant and full of life.
  6. Aomori: Aomori offered a mix of natural beauty and cultural heritage, with its stunning landscapes and historic sites.
  7. Hakodate: Just when we thought we had missed the cherry blossom season, Hakodate surprised us with a spectacular display in Goryokaku Park. The sight of cherry blossoms in full bloom was a perfect end to our port visits.

Exploring Japan

Travelling with my internet-savvy niece, we managed to explore each port independently. We used a variety of transportation methods, including trains, buses, trams, cable cars, and taxis. Each port felt like a new adventure, offering unique experiences and sights.

Cultural Highlights

In Kyoto, we attended a mesmerising Geisha show, complete with beautifully coloured costumes. Throughout our journey, we visited numerous shrines and temples, each one more beautiful and sacred than the last.

Final Thoughts

This cruise around Japan was an adventure of a lifetime. From the bustling streets of Tokyo to the serene temples of Kyoto, every moment was filled with wonder and discovery. I believe this holiday would appeal to all age groups, as there is truly something for everyone. The best time to visit is in March or April when the weather is pleasant, and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom.

If you’re looking for a perfect getaway that combines culture, history, and natural beauty, a cruise around Japan with Celebrity Cruises is an excellent choice. Happy travels!
